Humpbacks of Angoon
(running time approx. 20 minutes)

In contrast to the famous, elaborate songs of the Humpback during wintering in Hawaii, the short calls these whales produce in Alaska during feeding season have rarely been documented. These dramatic sounds are likely associated with group hunting behavior.

In the summer of 2005, The Jupiter team traveled to the tiny town of Angoon in Southeastern Alaska to attempt to capture these sounds.  Here is the story of our expedition.

Current Weather

Puako, Hawaii 2008/2009

The whales have already been spotted in the sanctuary! This is much earlier than anyone remembers previously...and we hope to have our system up and broadcasting as soon as possible.

We got a late start last year, but could make it up this year with an early start and a broadcast that could last nearly 6 months! Normally it isn't until around Christmas time that there are enough whales in the area (a critical mass, you might say) in order to hear their songs consistently, but this year could be different.

Keep in touch, and let us know what you think. Aloha.

About the Humpbacks

When the whales arrive in Hawaii  in late Fall they come to mate, give birth and nurse their young until they are strong enough for the 2500 - 3000 mile journey north to Alaska in early Spring.
